A well-known area pizza chain is closing several stores. Some Mark’s Pizzerias are closing in parts of the Finger Lakes and Central New York.

A spokesman for the Mark’s Pizzeria chain, Joe Kondas, says that around 13 stores are either closing or have already closed.

Even after the closures, Mark’s will still have nearly 30 stores.

Some of the pizza shops closing are in areas that include The Mall at Greece Ridge and Eastview Mall, and several throughout the Syracuse and Ithaca areas.

Kondas says part of the reason has to do with the profitability of individual stores. But he also says Mark’s is moving into a different concept for some of its existing stores.

He says that the pizza chain is expanding the size of some of its stores to provide more seating, creating up to 90-seat restaurants.  Kondas says the company’s research has shown that in areas where they’ve tried that, there has been a lot of customer interest.

Mark’s Pizzeria is based in Fairport. It was founded in 1982.
