Good Morning

It's the 48th anniversary of the founding of Burger King. Maybe a good day to take a look at this article on the nanoparticles in our food. (Grist.com)

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) will be on a conference call today talking up her plan to encourage more lending by credit unions to small business, with the aim of creating 11,000 jobs.

Pulitzer-prize winner (and Rochester local) David Cay Johnston was on WYNC yesterday talking about the demise of the landline, and here's the article he did for Reuters on the topic back in March.

More updates after the jump.

Fiscal Cliff
Personal tax rates and taxes on small business are one part of the "fiscal cliff" conversation, but manufacturers have a whole raft of additional deductions and incentives that would be affected if the scheduled measures kick in, according to McGladrey.com

The Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation have put some figures on it here:

The Manufacturing Leadership Council is holding a conference call on the potential impact of the "fiscal Cliff" measures this Thursday.

Agriculture

And as David Sommerstein reports for North Country Public Radio, there's still the unresolved issue of the Farm Bill on top of it all.

Education

Rochester is the first city in New York to participate in  a new program which funds additional hours in the school day. Some students are looking at an additional 300 hours being added to their school year reports the Democrat and Chronicle and many others.

Science

Wired and the New Scientist have both been carrying stories that there is an imminent announcement of a private sector mission to the surface of the moon.

Energy

As our own Karen DeWitt reported yesterday, opponents of hydrofracking are saying that the release of the draft fracking regulations by the DEC without the accompanying completed health review is "putting the cart before the horse", writes Brian Neering for TimesUnion.com.

As our own Sarah Harris reported, the fiscal cliff timeline also coincides with the scheduled expiration of other tax credits for the renewable energy sector, (Huffpost)
