WATCH: A better way of filtering saltwater
Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Jeffrey Grossman and research assistant Shreya Dave are rethinking the way desalination works.
As water shortages continue to pressure global supplies of drinking water, Grossman and his lab aim to make filtering saltwater more energy-efficient. The way most desalination plants currently filter water are with an energy-intensive polymer membrane that separates the salt from the water. Using a new nano-size graphene filter, Grossman could bring energy costs down to make desalination a more realistic option to combat water shortages.
