New Harris contract may create up to 100 jobs

Sen. Charles Schumer says the recently announced $12.7 billion military contract that Harris Corp. is part of will create up to 100 jobs in the Rochester area.

Schumer, D-N.Y., released a statement this weekend saying that the contract, which involves two other companies, also will help preserve Harris Corp.’s current workforce in Rochester.

The 10-year contract calls for supplying radios and accessories to the Army. A statement released by Harris says that the Army expects to acquire about 65,000 radios, with more sophisticated capabilities than previous generations of tactical radios.

Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport, and Schumer have argued for changing military acquisition policies to end no-bid military contracts to allow companies like Harris to openly compete for this program.
