SYRACUSE (AP) Three western New York colleges are splitting more than $40,000 in a grant to conduct projects aimed at protecting the ecosystem of the Great Lakes.

The Syracuse-based Great Lakes Research Consortium says the funds are going to Buffalo State College, the University at Buffalo, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.

The money is being used for projects related to early detection of invasive species and lake-effect storm impact and projection.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  The wreck site of one of the earliest propeller-driven steamships to sail the Great Lakes has been found in Lake Ontario more than 150 years after it sank in a storm, killing everyone on board, a team of New York-based shipwreck hunters said Tuesday. 

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP & WXXI News) — Firefighting foam used to fight oil train spills and fires is being deployed to 19 cities across New York state.

The foam concentrate is stored in trailers along with equipment needed to apply the foam to an oil spill. The foam forms a blanket over oil spills and contains fires.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the trailers are being placed in cities along the north-south and east-west routes of oil trains that cross the state, from Buffalo to Albany and Plattsburgh to Rockland County.


NICHOLS, N.Y. (AP)  Plans to expand a racetrack casino in New York's Southern Tier into a full resort casino were endorsed Wednesday by state gambling regulators, a pivotal step toward bringing expanding gambling _ and the promise of tourism and jobs _ to one of the state's most disadvantaged regions.
