Several New York State economic development agencies have joined forces with the Buffalo Niagara Enterprise under the marketing umbrella ‘NY Loves Nanotech’. The collaboration's aim was to gain support for the region's semiconductor industry during a global nanotech conference in San Francisco.

The annual SEMICON Westconference brings together business representatives and professionals from around the world to promote business opportunities in the nanotechnology industry.

Director of Investor and Public Relations for BNE, Paul Pfeiffer, says New York State was able to showcase their success in the semiconductor industry, through the products of their clientGlobalfoundries, based in Rochester.

Pfeiffer says the conference was also a chance to attract other semiconductor companies to the region, especially as the nanotech industry is booming.

“This is an industry that is not going to go away. It’s something that has significant investment created from the construction of these facilities, the jobs that are generated for these facilities. It just has tremendous potential to have a transformative impact on our region,” says Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer says they also received feedback from other development agencies across the country. He says a highlight of the event was that the state received a lot of praise for their investment in theScience Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Parkin Genesee County which is in the early stages of construction.

Buffalo Niagara Enterpriseor BNE, The Center for Economic Growth or CEG, The Genesee County Economic Development Centeror the GCEDC, Greater Rochester Enterprise, GRE and Mohawk Valley EDGE were some of the agencies that came together for the conference.

According to David Rooney from the Center for Economic Growth Senior Vice President, the semiconductor industry has its focus squarely on Upstate New York. Collaborative efforts to position upstate regions for growth are resonating across the entire industry, he adds.

“SEMICON West offers a superb forum to share our message with thousands of industry leaders, many of whom are native New Yorkers, graduates of our excellent colleges and universities or who work directly in the industry, and the consistent refrain we hear is that the leadership NY is demonstrating is critical for the industry and for US advanced manufacturing,” says Rooney.
